Snap 'em up
Fancy a delicious dinner that takes five minutes to prepare with about as much aforethought? Yarraville-based Alligator Brand recently introduced a number of ready-to-eat sauces to its range of frozen fresh pastas.
Co-owner Michael Coade says customers requested the range of napoli, basil pesto, black olive tapenade and puttanesca sauces.
As well as the goats cheese and pesto, pumpkin and parmesan, veal and field mushroom varieties, the pastas now include a spinach and ricotta tortellini, which cooks up beautifully from frozen. Bites added some roasted fennel and cracked pepper to the napoli, which, with the tortellini, created a tasty dinner in a snap. A fresh linguine is due out later this year

Who knew the best place to buy fresh pasta was from the freezer? That's where containers of Alligator pasta are found and we're not sure we'll ever go back to the dried stuff. There's cannelloni and a full pasta range but its Alligator's filled ravioli that really gives carbs a good name. The flavours include spinach and ricotta, mushroom, pumpkin and parmesan, and veal and caramelised onion, but our votes go to the goat's cheese and pesto ravioli. Paired with a ready-to-heat pasta sauce its done in less than five minutes. Seriously. Fast food at its best.

Alligator's retail shopfront at its factory in Yarraville is a little out of the way, but there you will find two kilogram boxes of beautiful fresh spaghetti, pappardelle and linguine, as well as hefty bags of quality-filled ravioli; try artichoke, lemon and mint or field mushroom for good flavour and texture. The gnocchi, in a variety of combinations, is as good as homemade.
